Nominate for the 2026 Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris – Prize amount increased to SEK 5 million

By 16 February, 2026No Comments

Efforts to achieve a healthier Baltic Sea continue to be recognized through Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris. Ahead of 2026, the prize is further strengthened as the award amount is increased to SEK 5 million, making it one of the largest environmental prizes of its kind. The nomination period is open from 16 February to 3 May.

Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris is awarded to researchers, organizations, or individuals whose work contributes to improvements in the Baltic Sea environment – or who demonstrate strong potential to make a significant difference in the future. The prize is awarded by Björn Carlsons Östersjöstiftelse (BalticSea2020), which since its inception has invested more than SEK 650 million in research and practical measures to improve the marine environment.

– There is strong commitment and impressive expertise surrounding the challenges facing the Baltic Sea. Through this prize, we want to highlight initiatives that not only identify the problems but also contribute solutions that can have a real and long-term impact, says Christina Rudén, Professor at Stockholm University and Chair of the Nomination Committee.

The nomination period for 2026 opens on 16 February, with nominations accepted until 3 May. Submitted nominations are reviewed and ranked by an international nomination committee comprising experts from several countries around the Baltic Sea. The final recipient is selected by the foundation’s board. The prize will be awarded at a ceremony in September 2026, which is the fifth time Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris is awarded.
