On September 15, Henrik Svedäng will be awarded at a prize ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden.
Henrik Svedäng, Associate Professor of Marine Ecology, has spent several decades advancing our understanding of how fish populations function and how they are affected by fishing and changes in the marine environment. His research has generated important knowledge about the population structure, migration patterns, growth and long-term development of species including cod and herring. Most importantly, Svedäng’s research has recognized that fish is not only an exploitable resource, but rather an integral component of the marine ecosystem, crucial for its health and biodiversity conservation.
– I feel very honored to receive Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris. I see it as recognition both of my marine research and of my efforts to contribute to the public debate on the status of fish populations and how they are managed. The prize will provide me with continued and enhanced opportunities to develop my research on the dynamics of fish populations, including how they are divided into separate populations and how this structure is maintained in the marine environment, says Henrik Svedäng.
Svedäng’s work extends far beyond academia. Throughout his career, he has been a strong advocate for science-based and sustainable fisheries management and has contributed to international policy work. He has also played an active role in the public discussion on Baltic Sea fish populations and fisheries management.

On September 15, Henrik Svedäng will be awarded the Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris 2026 at a prize ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden. As recipient of the award, he will receive SEK 5 million to continue his work for a healthier Baltic Sea.
