Björn Carlsons Östersjöstiftelse Commits SEK 250 Million to New Baltic Sea Research

By 9 June, 2026No Comments

Björn Carlsons Östersjöstiftelse is intensifying its efforts for a healthier Baltic Sea through a new research initiative worth a total of SEK 250 million through 2035. The initiative will support five major research projects focused on generating new knowledge and developing practical solutions to improve the Baltic Sea environment.

Since its establishment, Björn Carlsons Östersjöstiftelse (formerly BalticSea2020) has invested substantial resources in research and practical measures to improve the Baltic Sea. With this new commitment of SEK 250 million, the foundation’s total investments will reach SEK 1 billion by 2035.

Alongside the new research programme, Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris will continue to be awarded annually through 15 September 2035 — the date on which Björn Carlson would have celebrated his 100th birthday.

– Björn Carlson’s vision was that the foundation should contribute to turning the Baltic Sea’s development in a positive direction. Through this initiative, we aim to carry that ambition forward by creating opportunities for research that both generates new knowledge and leads to practical solutions for the marine environment, while also supporting the next generation of researchers in the field, says Bo Lehander, Chair of Björn Carlsons Östersjöstiftelse.

The programme will support applied research that combines scientific findings with concrete actions and solutions for the marine environment. Projects are expected to be interdisciplinary and bring together expertise from different fields relevant to the Baltic Sea. An important component of the initiative will also be ensuring that new knowledge reaches policymakers and other key stakeholders.

Three projects will be launched in 2027, followed by two additional projects in 2029. Each project may receive up to SEK 10 million annually over a five-year period.

Researchers, research groups, and organizations identified during an initial selection phase will be invited to develop full project proposals. They may receive up to SEK 100,000 to cover costs associated with proposal development, including international collaborations and interdisciplinary partnerships. In addition to researchers whose primary focus is the Baltic Sea, the foundation also welcomes researchers from other disciplines whose expertise may contribute to practical solutions for marine environmental challenges.
