Björn Carlsons Östersjöstiftelse is making a long-term commitment to research and action for a healthier Baltic Sea. Through 2035, the foundation will invest SEK 250 million in five major research projects focused on generating new knowledge and developing practical solutions for the marine environment.
The initiative supports applied research that translates scientific knowledge into concrete measures and decision-making that can improve the condition of the Baltic Sea. Projects are expected to be interdisciplinary, bringing together expertise from a range of fields relevant to Baltic Sea challenges.
Three projects will begin in 2027, followed by two additional projects in 2029. Each project may receive up to SEK 10 million annually over a five-year period. Research groups and organizations selected in the initial phase will be invited to develop full project proposals and may receive up to SEK 100,000 to support proposal development, including international collaborations and interdisciplinary partnerships.
The foundation welcomes applications from researchers whose primary focus is the Baltic Sea, as well as from researchers in other disciplines whose expertise may contribute to solutions for marine environmental challenges. Supporting early-career researchers and helping to build long-term scientific capacity is an important part of the initiative.
A key objective is to ensure that new knowledge reaches policymakers, authorities, and other stakeholders who can translate research findings into effective action.
Since its establishment, Björn Carlsons Östersjöstiftelse has invested substantial resources in research and practical measures for the Baltic Sea. With this initiative, the foundation’s total investments will reach SEK 1 billion by 2035.
