The 2022 Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris will be awarded to Professor Maren Voss of the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research in Warnemünde, Germany. The prize of SEK 3 million will be awarded on 3 June 2022 in Stockholm by H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria at the Baltic Sea Science Centre at Skansen.
Professor Maren Voss is being awarded the prize for her groundbreaking research on the importance of marine nitrogen, particularly in the Baltic Sea. Professor Voss realised early on that nitrogen plays a vital role in Baltic eutrophication and has used advanced isotope analyses to map the transformation processes and sources of nitrogen in the Sea. Her research has increased the focus on nitrogen in efforts to counteract Baltic Sea eutrophication.

About the Björn Carlsons Östersjöstiftelse and the Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris
The Björn Carlsons Östersjöstiftelse (BalticSea2020) is a private foundation established in 2005 through a donation of SEK 500 million by Björn Carlson (1935–2021), with the aim of promoting improvement of the Baltic Sea environment. From 2005 through 2020, the Foundation allocated grants totalling SEK 650 million for research and applied projects. The Foundation redirected its focus in 2021 and established an annual prize – the Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris. Building on the founder’s fundamental idea to actively promote a positive development for the Baltic Sea, the Foundation aspires to utilise the prize to recognise research and initiatives that have made a valuable contribution to improving the Baltic Sea environment.
The Foundation’s nomination committee submitted three nominees for the 2022 Baltic Sea Prize, from which the Foundation’s board selected Professor Maren Voss as winner.
