Nominations for the Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris 2025 are now open!

By 17 February, 2025No Comments

Efforts to improve the Baltic Sea’s environment once again have the opportunity to be recognized through the Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris. The prize, which amounts to four million SEK, aims to inspire and reward work that contributes to a more sustainable future for the Baltic Sea. The nomination period runs from February 17 to May 4.

The Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris is awarded to researchers, individuals, or organizations whose work has a positive impact on the Baltic Sea’s environment or has the potential to do so in the long term. The prize is presented by the Björn Carlsons Östersjöstiftelse (BalticSea2020), an organization that has invested over 650 million SEK in research and projects over the past 20 years to promote a healthier sea.

– We look forward to reviewing this year’s nominations. There are many individuals and organizations making crucial contributions to the Baltic Sea, and it is inspiring to see the breadth of knowledge and commitment in the work for a better marine environment,” says Christina Rudén, professor at Stockholm University and chair of the nomination committee.

The nomination committee, consisting of members from the Baltic Sea countries who are distinguished and established in the scientific community, reviews the submitted entries and selects three finalists. Finally, the foundation’s board appoints a winner who will receive the prize during the annual award ceremony in September.

The 2025 recipient will be the fourth to receive the Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris. Previous recipients have included researchers who have made significant contributions to improving the Baltic Sea’s condition, including research on nitrogen’s role in the sea and the effects of eutrophication.
